Bordeaux fine wine – Château Lilian Ladouys

Fine Wines - Vin Vino Direct

Fine Wines - Vin Vino Direct

What is known of the history of Lilian Ladouys begins in 1654, when the property was in the ownership of Jacques de Bercoyan, a Bordeaux magistrate. By this time the estate was already known as La Doys, an obvious precursor to the Ladouys of today, although the origins of this name remain unclear to me. From Bercoyan the estate passed to the Barre family who acquired it during the 18th Century, and who maintained their dominion over these vineyards for 150 years. Under their tutelage the estate produced wines of high quality judging by the opinions of the time, which ranked Lilian Ladouys considerably higher than most would place it today. By the early 20th Century however, during the difficult years between the two wars, the estate had deteriorated, and it was sold off in a piecemeal fashion. Today, however, under the directorship of Pierre Fougere who heads up the Société Chateau Lilian Ladouys, there has been investment and reported improvements. And for some years now the wines have been made under the auspices of Georges Pauli, so there should perhaps be some optimism that they may once more be as glorious as the estate’s 18th Century reputation suggests they can.

LillianladouysThe estate covers 48 hectares spread in a disparate fashion across the St Estèphe appellation, with more than ninety plots of vines in existence. About two-thirds of the vineyard is situated on well drained soils rich in coarse gravel, with pebbles up to 8 cm across dominating. The remaining vineyards are, as we might expect for St Estèphe, clay over a limestone bedrock. The varieties planted are 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and the vines have an average age of up close to 40 years. Once harvested the fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, before transfer into oak barrels, of which one-third are new with each vintage; the wine will remain here for 18 months before fining, filtration and bottling. The grand vin is Chateau Lilian Ladouys, of which there are perhaps 20000 cases per annum.

We are proud to offer the 1995 vintage for sale at only £23.80 ….click here to go to the wine and buy online.

Tasting notes – Saturated red with violet reflections, this is an intensely scented wine with wild aromatic mulberries, setting you off on a joyous journey through the layers of generous oak, onto the expressive, rich and lingering red fruit palate.

Award winning Fine Champagne – Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

…well we’ve done it again – another very ‘hard-to-find’ exclusive Champagne brought to you by Vin Vino Direct ..and this one has won 2 awards; BRONZE MEDAL WINNER at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2008 and BRONZE MEDAL WINNER at the International Wine Challenge 2008!

A family producer since 1860 founded by Edmond de Ayala located in the heart of the Champagne, a small jewel in a great terroir. Nicolas Klym has been the Cellar Master of Champagne Ayala for over 25 years and pays particular attention to the quality of the grapes in order to produce great cuvees.
Located in Aÿ, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims vineyards, Ayala naturally focuses on Grand Cru Pinot Noir for its Brut Majeur and its Vintage Brut. Ayala is a “small” house, the artisan of champagne-making. Its small size enables Ayala to produce “haute couture” by sourcing its grapes mainly in Grand Cru – (17 in total) and Premier Cru vineyards (44 in total out of 319 villages).

Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

The origin of the grapes, the selection of only the very best juice (the cuvee), a special gift for blending, long ageing in the cellars and a true passion for wine : these are the elements that guarantee the quality of the champagne made at Ayala. Longer ageing on the lees gives Ayala a vibrant zesty style with strong emphasis on black Pinot Noir fruity flavour.

Tasting Notes: Pure 100% Pinot Noir grapes macerated to give an intense, salmon-coloured rosé Champagne that is packed with soft berry fruit flavours. Underlying these flavours is a persistent, creamy mousse, which lingers seductively in the mouth. Under the ownership today of Bollinger…hence the guaranteed quality.

What the Press say

“toasty, elegant, red berryish.” Recommended by Anthony Rose, The Independent, May 2008

“…a desperately sexy wine to wallow in.” Recommended by Matthew Jukes, Money Week, February 2008.

“…such a pretty wine…” Recommended by Susy Atkins, The Sunday Telegraph, February 2008

Christmas Champagnes – a trendy collection from Billecart Salmon

billecart salmon logoFounded in 1818 the Billecart family has lived in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ since the mid-sixteenth century. The House was established when Nicolas-François Billecart married Elisabeth Salmon. The Grande Marque quickly established an international reputation with a US subsidiary being set up in the early 1840′s. Russia became the company’s major export market but this trade collapsed after the 1917 revolution. Eight years later the decision was made to sell off the firm’s vineyards and the money raised was invested in the winery and cellars.CHA054

The fifth generation of the family still own and run the company today. The style of House – less ‘dosage’ and quality fruit ageing for longer on the lees….the wines; light, fragrant and full flavoured with great complexity and longevity…..

An Italian fine wine not to be missed … our Amarone Classico ‘Riserva Gino Cordin’

Fine Wines - Vin Vino Direct

Fine Wines

Amarone della Valpolicella is the unquestioned king of the wines of Verona. It was originally made under the ancient production of Recioto which then became dry and bitter purely by chance; as a result since the beginning of the 20th century it has been called “Amarone”, from the adjective “amaro” meaning “bitter”. The unique and unmistakable feature of this wine is its production from original grapes of Valpolicella: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara, which are considered a great treasure of this area.

Another unique characteristic of this wine is the process of vinification:Accordini 'Gino Cordin' the grapes are dried on racks till February – March where they are transformed into shrivelled, sweet, tiny concentrated berries which are attacked by a mold called botrytis, or noble rot . . . the one you associate with the world’s finest dessert wine, Sauternes. The sugar content of these little berries is very high . . . but the wine ends up fermented totally dry, and is then barrel-aged for 2 to 3 years - a fine example of dry red wine refined in wooden barrels.

Accordinilogo

The wine: This 2003 Amarone Classico ‘Riserva Gino Cordin’, from the famous Accordini vineyard, comes in a magnificent magnum bottle and packs a weighty punch of 16.5% vol. It is presented in a wooden box, wax sealed cork and limited to only 5,842 bottles, with each individually numbered.
The wine is a deep garnet red with a rich and concentrated bouquet of dried fruit – uncork 2 hours before serving and enjoy in large balloon glasses.

Grapes: Corvina Veronese 75%, Rondinella 20%, Molinara 5%

This wine is certainly one which should be brought out at the Christmas table to enjoy with family and friends – with its fantastic packaging, it also makes a great present for  those people who enjoy exclusive wine click here for more details.
