It is here that for long generations, the Fiegls have been producing wines which have gained world-wide recognition. Century-old tradition meets modern technology in the wise and insightful research for quality, to reach the harmony and balance which can be found in every single drop of the Fiegl and Villa Dugo selections of wines. The history of the property can be traced back to 1782 when a vineyard called “Meja” was sold to Valentino Fiegl. And now, after two centuries the Fiegl brothers, Alessio, Giuseppe and Rinaldo are still running the 30 hectare estate, 25 of which are planted with vines. It is a family-run company that has achieved important results in the field of wine making, continuing its tradition in genuine products and unchanged respect for nature.

This Merlot is a deep ruby red wine – a full and fragrant aroma with a soft bouquet of wild berries, fruits and an underlying hint of vanilla. With a 13.5% vol alcohol content, it is ideal with roasted meat and game…serve at 16-18°C for perfection. This is another exclusive wine that we carry from this boutique Italian producer – click here to order.

The Area: The Collio Goriziano stretches across the hills north of the province of Gorizia on the Slovenian border. The particular soil of the region, called “ponca” in the local dialect, technically flysch, provides the vine with important minerals which clearly mark Olsavia’s wines.
Flysch is made up of marnas’ (calcareous clay) and sandstone’s (calcified sand) stratified submarine sediments. Flysch is typically a deposit formed at the beginning of the orogenetic phase (about 50 million years ago), contemporaneously with the mountains’ building, composed by fissile sedimentary rocks. It is definitely the best ground for vine-growing – aided also by the climate, which is particularly temperate thanks to the influence of the nearby Adriatic Sea and the airiness of the area because of the Northeast wind (Bora). For these reasons Oslavia, can justly be considered one of the best vineyard terrains of the Collio.

We also have the following wines from this small producer;

The feudal Castle of Montegrosso d’Asti, built in 1134 by order of the Marquis Bonifacio del Vasto, lord of the city of Asti, dominates and extensive hilly area which is very much dedicated to the culture of vines, and it is the castle’s tranquil spacious, centuries-old cellars which provide a worthy home for the noble D.O.C. and D.O.C.G. wines of these hills. The owners of the Montegrosso winery, the Motta family, have been producing wines since 1794. The Ruleja vineyards, including two hectares of old grapevines planted 60 years ago, benefit from the calcareous soil with sandy strata and the high altitude.

Love of wine is something which is passed on from father to son, from one generation to the next. In fact there are documents to prove that the Motta family have been wine makers since 1794; and are therefore proud to show their experience and traditions by presenting today, just as they have done in the past, the very best of Piedmontese wine making. These wines, which are produced according to traditional and consistent winemaking methods, are selected at the right moment, matured in oak casks, and at the point when they reach the correct degree of maturity they are bottled and stored.

This 1997 Indré Castello di Montegrosso is from the Piemonte region – Castello di Montegrosso is the only azienda which produces this rare red wine “‘Indré”. Produced from the grapes of the same name together with other rare varieties grown in Piedmont in the Middle Ages, rediscovered & cultivated exclusively by Castello di Montegrosso.

The wine – It is an original wine of exceptional nose, harmoniously blended, generous and rich, elegant and lingering with traces of Lily-of-the-Valley and almonds. The flavours are enhanced, warm and velvety – an attractive ruby red colour , a sensational bouquet of dark red berries and a taste of fruit and truffle.

This small estate winery has deep country roots: their founders have been share-croppers, then landowners and finally wine-makers. Today, the company is led by Stefano Accordini himself, helped by his wife Giuseppina and his two sons, Tiziano and Daniele. The family estate extends over 6 hectares situated in Negrar, the heart of Valpolicella, in a town called Bessole.

These vineyards are a precious source of great satisfaction thanks to their southern-east exposure and their soil, which is well balanced in its components. A good choice of three different varieties of grapes, Corvine, Rondinelle and Corvinone, grafted by Stefano and taken from vines of high quality, guarantees the production of ripe grapes well suited to be withered. A great focus is given to the grape withering, a technique which enables the production of the most important wines of the Accordini family such as Amarone, Fornetto, Fornetto Acinato, Recioto Acinato, the white “Bricco delle Bessole” and the innovative IGT Passo. The traditional techniques, such as Ripasso, are employed to produce fine wines of a very high level, such as the Valpolicella Classico Superiore.

This featured Italian fine wine is the 2000 Amarone Riserva Classico – ‘Le Bessole’ … just one of the fine red wines to come out of this vineyard. This wine is a unique Riserva made only in outstanding vintages.

The grapes: 70% Corvina, 20% Rondinella, 10% Corvinoni – selection of the best grapes from individual bunches in the premier cru region. The grapes are generally harvested in the first two weeks of October. They are laid on racks in single layers to allow a better air circulation. The grapes start to dry out on the fruit and on average, after 120 days, they loose 45% of their weight. Throughout this period of time the grapes are checked on a regular basis and any damaged clusters are removed. The grapes are vinified end of February with a long maceration on the skins until the wine reaches an alcohol content of at least 15%. The wine is then refined in kegs before being transferred into barrels. The wine is usually bottled 3 years later.

Tasting: Intense garnet color with black cherry and raspberry aromas. The mouth is full, persistent with a good structure. An incredibly rich and smooth wine which can be purchased though ourselves.

Amarone della Valpolicella is the unquestioned king of the wines of Verona. It was originally made under the ancient production of Recioto which then became dry and bitter purely by chance; as a result since the beginning of the 20th century it has been called “Amarone”, from the adjective “amaro” meaning “bitter”. The unique and unmistakable feature of this wine is its production from original grapes of Valpolicella: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara, which are considered a great treasure of this area.

Another unique characteristic of this wine is the process of vinification: the grapes are dried on racks till February – March where they are transformed into shrivelled, sweet, tiny concentrated berries which are attacked by a mold called botrytis, or noble rot . . . the one you associate with the world’s finest dessert wine, Sauternes. The sugar content of these little berries is very high . . . but the wine ends up fermented totally dry, and is then barrel-aged for 2 to 3 years - a fine example of dry red wine refined in wooden barrels.

Grower Profile:

The traditional techniques, such as Ripasso, are employed to produce fine wines of a very high level, such as the Valpolicella Classico Superiore

Linteo is the latest Italian ‘hot property’ - substantial viticultural resources and obvious inherent quality has earnt it this reputation. We have subscribed to this by establishing a wine making partnership with Mario, who exclusively brings us this modern Venetian style of wine, which breathes the warm air of sun-beaten vines from the glass. This wine is dynamic and fresh.

Tasting Notes
The dark ruby colour reveals a young fruity wine with a bouquet of raspberries. Medium bodied and fresh it has a pleasing good firmness to the fruit-filled finish.

One of our favourite wines for enjoying with simple Italian Pizza and Pasta dishes, uplifting with a good weight – well made and value for money….

The Salvalai Winery is of International reputation, having won medals as far as Ontario! Their range spans from the marvellous Merlot to the finest and delicious Flaio Primitivo. Mixing the best of the traditional methods with the latest stainless steel vat technology, their wine making is supreme, and the results show in producing consistent wines of very high quality.

Primitivo Flaio : From the “heel of the boot” comes Italy’s answer to Zinfandel. Yes, they say that Primitivo and Zinfandel have the same roots, but Italy’s answer is a softer version and lower in alcohol. The Puglia region has a nice warm climate and Flaio produces Primitivo which is lush, with tastes of black berries, bramble and spice … think barbecued ribs!

Tasting Notes: This 2007 Primitivo is the Italian forefather of California’s famous Zinfandel, this is a delicious, dark red, voluptuous wine with a long elegant finish and a clean fruit filled nose. A must!
