…so here we have the 1994 Château Croizet Bages – 5′me Cru Classé from the Pauillac region.  Some would argue this may be the finest Croizer-Bages made in over 20 years – well, why not taste for yourself!  At only £25.50, this is an affordable introduction into our Fine Wine selections….

Tasting Notes : An attractive nose of cassis, fruit, herbs and vanilla. Good ripeness, a pure clean taste of fruit and oak with slight tannins and a pleasing finish.

The Croizet family acquired this property in the 18th century, planted his vineyard on the Bages ‘plateaux’ and called it appropriately Château Croizet-Bages. Today the 22 hectares of this classed growth vineyard is owned and managed by Lucienne and Jean-Michel Quié producing an annual average of 110,000 bottles with the quintessential flavour of a typical Pauillac wine with fresh soft fruit and oak flavours, vigour and dryness, cigar box aroma with a hint of sweetness making this wine the best loved in the world.

Croizet Bages

Croizet Bages

Area History and Terrior:  Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac’s life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth. Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: – come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, “excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils”, – satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes – 6.27 oz. – per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) and base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Chilean organic red wine from the Adobe stable

Chile is very good at making unpretentious, fruity wines at very reasonable prices …the best examples of the red wine grape varieties such as Cabernet or Merlot are delicious and juicy – white wine, especially Sauvignon Blanc is also crisp and fresh.

Chilean Cabernet has a characteristic cassis taste, while good Merlots tend to be soft and raspberry flavoured. Carmenere is Chile’s ‘own’ grape, making soft, plummy wines. Syrah from Colchagua is also worth a look…as for the white wines, crisp Sauvignons and ripe and elegant Chardonnays are the norm.

Chilean Red Wine from AdobeSo, this brief introduction brings us nicely round to our featured wine….the organic 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Adobe from the Colchagua Valley in Chile.

Tasting notes: Deep red cherry colour, seductive berry fruit, full body, soft on the palate leaving a graceful, chocolate, cinnamon flavour. From the famous wine producer Alvaro Espinoza. (suitable for Vegans) …click here to buy online at only £8.65

Grower: Produced by the great man himself, Alvaro Espinoza. Further to studying enology at both the Universities of Santiago and Bordeaux, Alvaro worked at such famous estates as Chateau Margaux and California’s Bonterra estate, before returning home to Chile.
Fully committed to both organic and bio-dynamic viticulture, he has adopted a bio-dynamic approach which has given birth to Emiliana Orgánico, a unique project in CHILE and pioneer in Latin America. This project is the result of the search of the maximum quality, through productive processes, which are shown in the final product, around the concern and respect for the ground, by sustentable agriculture, minimizing the artificial processes and the use of synthetic products, fundamentally seeking to anticipate the illnesses before treating them, which implies a very delicate work on each plant.
The vineyard also grows acacia trees to make homeopathic treatments, which are subsequently used in the wine – Alpacas and geese are free to roam around, acting as nature’s very own effective weed controllers.

If you like this wine, you’ll be pleased that we also stock more from this range;

Château Gaillard’s ‘Touraine-Mesland’ Chenin white wine

    Fine Wine Online

    Fine Wine Online

    Château Gaillard

    Château Gaillard

The vineyards of Château Gaillard are situated on the hills that dominate the northern side of the river Loire between Amboise and Blois in the very heart of the appelation ‘Touraine-Mesland AOC’. Since 1978 Vincent Girault has sought to produce wines true to the character of their ‘terroir’ – from 1989, the Château adapted its production to establish true biodynamic methods. With 17 hectares of red grape varieties grown on sandy soil and 13 hectares of white grape varieties on flinty clay, the vines benefit from a southern exposure to the sun in the rich and fertile Loire valley.

This wine is the quite rare, Gold Medal winning, Mesland Blanc, made from the delicate Chenin grape, which the locals call ‘Pineau de Loire’. It is a clean silvery colour, with a  soft dry body expressing a bouquet of exotic lychee and quinces, melting in the mouth with considerable length – ideal with chicken and pork dishes.

Vin Vino Direct are proud to have Vincent’s Chenin for sale at only £8.50 – click here to order …but we only have some 40 bottles left, so be quick!

GaillardA few words from Vincent Girault;  “To me the world of wine producing can be compared to a pyramid: a pyramid with four distinct levels with each interacting with each other: Firstly the basic level: the land, the soil, the Mother Earth and the terror, as without a good soil you can never produce a good wine.
Next level up the climate, here in the Loire Valley we are very fortunate in having an excellent microclimate very much suited to our type of wine production. Followed by the ideal range of grape types: one or more for each soil type, each variety suiting different circumstances: Gamay, Cabernet, Chenin etc. Finally the wine producer himself, the creator, the architect of his or her own wine. Each of these four factors are important in themselves but cannot act on their own; it is the combination of all four which leads to the magic of a great wine!”

Award winning Fine Champagne – Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

…well we’ve done it again – another very ‘hard-to-find’ exclusive Champagne brought to you by Vin Vino Direct ..and this one has won 2 awards; BRONZE MEDAL WINNER at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2008 and BRONZE MEDAL WINNER at the International Wine Challenge 2008!

A family producer since 1860 founded by Edmond de Ayala located in the heart of the Champagne, a small jewel in a great terroir. Nicolas Klym has been the Cellar Master of Champagne Ayala for over 25 years and pays particular attention to the quality of the grapes in order to produce great cuvees.
Located in Aÿ, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims vineyards, Ayala naturally focuses on Grand Cru Pinot Noir for its Brut Majeur and its Vintage Brut. Ayala is a “small” house, the artisan of champagne-making. Its small size enables Ayala to produce “haute couture” by sourcing its grapes mainly in Grand Cru – (17 in total) and Premier Cru vineyards (44 in total out of 319 villages).

    Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

    Ayala Majeur Brut Rosé

The origin of the grapes, the selection of only the very best juice (the cuvee), a special gift for blending, long ageing in the cellars and a true passion for wine : these are the elements that guarantee the quality of the champagne made at Ayala. Longer ageing on the lees gives Ayala a vibrant zesty style with strong emphasis on black Pinot Noir fruity flavour.

Tasting Notes: Pure 100% Pinot Noir grapes macerated to give an intense, salmon-coloured rosé Champagne that is packed with soft berry fruit flavours. Underlying these flavours is a persistent, creamy mousse, which lingers seductively in the mouth. Under the ownership today of Bollinger…hence the guaranteed quality.

    What the Press say

“toasty, elegant, red berryish.” Recommended by Anthony Rose, The Independent, May 2008

“…a desperately sexy wine to wallow in.” Recommended by Matthew Jukes, Money Week, February 2008.

Our favourite Black Pepper Shiraz red wine from Australia

    AUR068
    Black Shiraz

This wine is absolutely flying off our shelves at the moment ..and we certainkly know why – just taste this wine and you’ll fall in love with its peppery and spicy undertones balanced by the weighty fruit and alcohol punch – get your bottles today before we run out!

    Grower Profile
Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

This 2008 Australian Black Shiraz is from Berton Vineyards, located in High Eden, a sub-region of Eden Valley, South Australia. The altitude and cool climate provides ideal conditions for the production of high quality fruit. Surrounded by native yacca grass and watched over by the superb blue wren, they grow some of the best Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in the hills.

Tasting Notes: A deep black colour with a huge bouquet of ripe plums, blackberries and a vanilla pepper underlay. The palate is full of flavour - blueberries, blackberries, black figs’ licquorice and spice A smooth 14.5% by vol.

One very important thing to keep in mind when sampling any syrah-based wine is that the wine requires more “breathing” time than most other varietals for the aromas to open up and the palate to soften. Decanting is highly recommended, since very little is accomplished simply by opening the bottle and letting it sit on the table a while before serving. In lieu of decanting, pour a glassful and allow the glass to sit a bit before sipping.
